What Does Liposomal Mean?

What Does Liposomal Mean?

I got curious when I realized how much improvement my patients were seeing from IV therapy versus common oral supplements. Supplemental nutrients are affected by stomach acid and enzymes, leading to poor absorption and utilization by the body. In many cases, you'll need very high doses because most of the supplement passes through the digestive system, but high doses can mean gastrointestinal upset and side effects.

That's where liposomes come in! Liposomal technology allows for better absorption, fewer side effects, and therapeutic benefits from lower doses. Liposomal supplements are growing in popularity, but what does liposomal mean, and is it worth the hype? That's precisely what we'll cover in today's article as we dive into liposomes, liposomal supplements, and what separates Core Med Science from other manufacturers.

What Are Liposomes?

Liposomes are a supplement delivery vehicle; they surround the nutrient or compound, protecting it from stomach acid and enzymes. The liposomes remain intact in the small intestine, where they absorb into the bloodstream. Liquid liposomes can also be absorbed directly into the body via the mouth, bypassing the gut altogether. Hands down, liposomes are the top strategy for delivering supplements into the body! (Source 1)

The liposomal structure is similar to the body's cell membranes. Each liposome is a small phospholipid sphere creating a protective outer layer, and the supplemental nutrients (vitamins, minerals, antioxidants, peptides, etc.) are safe in the middle. Liposomes can also deliver pharmaceuticals, such as gene therapies for cancer treatments. (Source 1, 2)

Phospholipids contain a phosphate molecule "head" and a fatty acid "tail," which allow them to transport water- or fat-soluble compounds in water-soluble blood and body fluids. Phosphatidylcholine is the most beneficial phospholipid for liposomal technology. Milk, egg yolks, soybeans, and sunflower seeds naturally contain phosphatidylcholine. (Source 1)

Liposomal Advantages

What does liposomal mean in regard to delivery advantages? Liposomal supplements have clear advantages over common oral supplements. The liposomal delivery system allows for:

● Improved nutrient absorption

● Higher bioavailability (nutrients more available to cells in the body)

● Easy to use with both liquid and capsule options

● Liquid options allow for easy dose adjustments

● More benefits from lower dosages (cost-effective)

● More accessible than IV therapy (Source 1)

Still, as with any supplement, quality matters. Just because a supplement is liposomal doesn't mean it's high quality or will be effective. Because of the rising popularity of liposomes, many companies cut corners, leading to concerns with manufacturing, ingredient quality, and contamination.

Core Med Science Quality

Core Med Science means quality. We use a proprietary, physician-developed liposomal technology utilizing phosphatidylcholine from sunflower lecithin. Sourcing sunflower instead of soy means our products contain no allergens or genetically modified ingredients. Additionally, we don't use solvents, alcohol, or chemicals in our manufacturing processes. Core Med Science supplements are manufactured in the United States and are GMP-compliant.
