Without one essential nutrient, your bones break down, your gums bleed, your hair and teeth fall out, and deprived of it long enough you would die.

Our bodies don’t make it. But you can get it from the foods you eat. The bad news? Only about 18% of it gets absorbed into your blood stream when taken from food, and many Americans are actually deficient. That means they could be at an increased risk of cardiovascular illness, premature aging, an increased stress response, and poor energy.

What is this wonder-nutrient without which we can't live?

Vitamin C.

What is Vitamin C?

For a comprehensive  review of vitamin C and all of its benefits please read our review article here.

Vitamin C, also known as ascorbic acid, is one of 39 essential nutrients without which our bodies cannot function properly. This essential nutrient cannot be made in our bodies, humans have lost the ability to make Vitamin C unlike other species, so it must be acquired from the foods we eat.

Deprived of vitamin C for too long and you will die of a condition called scurvy. Scurvy was an epidemic amongst 18th century sailors before it was realized that the condition was readily treatable with a few lemons. Today it is rare. However, suboptimal levels of vitamin C are rampant in the modern world, and this can lead to a host of health consequences.

We now know that lack of vitamin C can potentially increases our risk of cardiovascular disease, compromises your immune system and energy production, and some cutting-edge research suggests that high-dose vitamin C may even be useful in oncology.

Why Liposomal Vitamin C?

Only about 18% of the vitamin C we get in food is available in our blood stream. Normal capsule or powdered supplements often fair even worse than this. The result is that people take more and more vitamin C trying to optimize levels. This can lead to digestive problems like upset stomach and diarrhea.

Liposomal formulations get around these issues by increasing absorption. The vitamin C in this product is protected from the harsh environment of the digestive system inside of liposomal structures—natural microscopic spheres of fat called phospholipids designed to make this crucial nutrient more available to your body. That means you can optimize your levels more quickly and more effectively without uncomfortable side effects or digestive complaints.

How to Take this Product

Take 3 softgels (1000 mg) with or without food once or several times a day. Avoid taking these late in the evening or before bed as the choline from the phosphatidylcholine complex, the main phospholipid, can be very activating and cause insomnia.

Vitamin C is essential to life itself. Without it we cannot survive. Human beings unfortunately have lost the ability to manufacture Vitamin C, so it must be obtained from food. Unfortunately, our bodies can only absorb maximally about 18% of the vitamin C we ingest. Taking more vitamin C does not increase absorption and can cause stomach irritation and severe diarrhea. For this reason Liposomal Vitamin C has a large advantage over regular Vitamin C.

Due to the liposomal technology employed this product, the absorption of liposomal Vitamin C is markedly higher than the plain Vitamin C equivalent. In addition the gastric irritation and diarrhea are also typically avoided.

Liposomes are microscopic fat-soluble spheres with Vitamin C intentionally trapped inside the water-soluble center. Liposomes actually resemble our own cells - in fact liposomes are made of the exact same building blocks as our own cell membranes. Phospholipids, like Phosphatidylcholine (PC), are the common building blocks of cell walls as well as our liposomes.

The Phosphatidylcholine Complex (PC) making up the liposomes themselves also serves to replenish our own cell membranes with a fresh supply of phospholipids (the building blocks of all cell membranes) to strengthen cell structure. Just as importantly, mitochondria which are the energy producing organelles in each cell, have their own inner and outer membranes where the final steps of ATP (energy production) occurs. PC is thus equally useful in restoring mitochondrial function.

Role of Vitamin C:

Vitamin C is a key co-factor in collagen production (skin, blood vessels, ligaments and bones), adrenalin and carnitine synthesis (energy), and it could directly boost the immune system. Of course it is best know as a potent antioxidant.

Collagen Production: Collagen is the structural protein found in all animal tissue. It holds our muscles to our bones, provides structural support for veins and arteries, and more. Vitamin C is required for collagen synthesis along with the amino acids proline and lysine. Vitamin C is, therefore, required for the maintenance of normal connective tissue as well as for wound healing since synthesis of connective tissue is the first event in wound tissue remodeling. Vitamin C is also required for bone remodeling due to the presence of collagen in the organic matrix of bones. In the absence of enough collagen, individuals could develop thin skin and weaker blood vessels, bones, tendons and ligaments. This may lead, in severe cases, to aneurysms (blood vessel wall thinning), possible stroke, and even the ruptured ligaments and tendons commonly seen in sports injuries.

Energy Production: Vitamin C is required in the metabolism of fat for energy use. It takes part in the synthesis of a molecule called l-carnitine which serves as a shuttle bringing fat(fatty acids) into the mitochondria. This is the first step in our cells' metabolism of fat to provide energy for our cells in the form of ATP. This means vitamin C could have a powerful influence on our energy levels.

Immune Support: Vitamin C may may have a direct effect against infectious agents like bacteria, viruses, and even abnormal dysplastic cells. At very high doses, only available when administered in intravenous (IV) form, it can generate peroxide (H2O2), which may account for this effect. Read More about High Dose IV Vitamin C here.

Adrenal Support: Vitamin C is required for conversion of tyrosine to adrenalin, and the synthesis of the bile. It is important to replete vitamin C level during times of high stress.

Antioxidant Properties Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that helps may protect cell structures like collagen, proteins, and DNA from damage by free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) which are commonly released during normal metabolism but may increase when dealing high stress states, chronic illness and infections. Free radicals are also present in the environment in the form of UV rays (sun damage), cigarette smoke and polluted air.

F.A.Q.

What is the difference between the softgels and the liquid Vitamin C?

The liquid works faster than the softgels because the softgels have to open which delays onset. The liquid also has more phospholipids (PC Complex), 500 mg versus the 350 mg of the softgels. The PC complex has its own very therapeutic and nutritional effect potentially lowering cholesterol, aiding in cardiovascular health, enhancing focus and alertness and balancing the autonomic nervous system. Liquid vitamin C is flavored and has an orange-citrus taste that some people do not like or want to avoid because of sensitivity to stevia or fructose. The liquid also has to be refrigerated after opening. The softgels don't have to be refrigerated and don't have any taste. They are great for taking with you on trips, at work, etc.

Why are there 3 softgels for one dose of 1000 mg?

We would have liked to have 1-2 softgels for ease of use. However, we were not able to incorporate the necessary phospholipids than form the liposomes as well as the 1000 mg of Vitamin C without making the softgels too large. Even though there are 3 softgels per dose, you are still getting 30 doses per bottle as there are 90 softgels in the bottle.

Can I take multiple doses? Can I split the pills? Should I take multiple doses at once or split them up?

It is okay to experiment with dosing which is highly individualized. You can take multiple doses all at once or split them up as needed. Avoid taking over 3000 mg total of PC Complex (about 25 softgels).

What is the shelf life?

The shelf life is 24 months after the Manufacturing Date (MFG). Some bottles have the MFG and the Expiration Date (EXP) printed on them. Newer batches only have the Expiration Date printed on the label.

What is the origin of the Vitamin C in this product? What is Quali®-C?

Quali®-C is a brand of Vitamin C made by DSM. We trust the high quality of this Vitamin C as it is made from glucose derived from non-GMO cornfields in Europe. DSM guarantees non-GMO sources and finished product. Here’s a note from their website:

"Our plant located in the green hills of Scotland offers the most complete and trustworthy range of pure vitamin C forms worldwide. We can guarantee GMO-free starting materials and final product.

Will I have more energy?

Many people do feel more energy. Others do not feel much of a difference. Those who have higher levels of chronic inflammation, fatigue, or chronic illness are more likely to feel an immediate difference in energy levels than those who are healthier. Vitamin C continues to work regardless of how much "energy" you feel. It has silent effects on metabolism, collagen formation, and free radical neutralization.

Do these have to be refrigerated?

No, just store in a cool place.

Some softgels stick to each other. Are they still ok?

Yes, this can happen due to the gelatin in the capsule or, sometimes, excessive heat during transport. As long as the capsule is intact the contents are fine. If in doubt just write to us at info@coremedscience.com - we can always issue a refund or send you a replacement if there is a reason to be concerned.
